Racist or Right? Exploring the Issue

After doing some research on the issue of naming teams or mascots after cultures, I have come to the conclusion that it is not disrespectful to do this. I don't think believe this is offensive, and I don't think they intended to offend anyone. I think it is a great honor to be named after a mascot because that team is trying to live up to the name. I don't think individuals should be taking offense when it is not intended. As long as the team is being respectful I find there is no harm.

1. She wants to make a clear distinction between the words "tattoo" and "moko" because they have serious differences. When someone gets a tattoo there is really no deep meaning that comes with it. However, when you get a "moko" there is deep meaning in it, and there are good reasons, and stories behind what the moko displays. It can represent many things such as beauty, warriorhood, identity, and many other things like these. I think she is directing this message to the people who are unaware of the real meaning behind the moko's, and the people who are uneducated and think they are just simple tattoos.

2. She uses fact in her song. I think this is effective because it provides information in the lyrics of the songs, and it teaches a lesson to those who are listening. Songs are catchy, and the lyrics are easy to remember if you listen to it frequently, so what she is teaching in the song sticks with people, even if they do not realize it.

3. She has strong beliefs against globalization. She believes that you should maintian your ethnic background, and keep it for yourself. She doesn't believe that you should freely trade between countries, she believes that you should pay more for the goods of tribes.  The messages presented in her songs strongly suggest that she has these beliefs, and I think she is proud of what she believes and wants many people to be aware.

Legacy

A. The term legacy refers to anything handed down from the past,  such as an ancestor or a predecessor.

B.   The "Richmond Oval" located in Vancouver BC was built for the special occasion of the 2010 Olympics. This building is where most of the events will take place, and it will be the main attraction of the olympics. I think it will be the legacy of the 2010 olympics because it will be where most of the action takes place, it is where athletes from all around the world will be fighting for the gold metal, new records will be set in this building, people from all around the would will remember this building. The "Richmond Oval" is a legacy because it will still be used after the olympics and everyone who enters it will remember the 2010 olympics, and the outstanding events that took place there will live on as long as that building is standing.

High Risk Activity

One high risk activity that many citizen of our town participate in is quading. Quading is extremely fun, and can be a great way to let out steam, and if you live on a farm it can be a wonderful source of transportation that allows you to get around without starting your motor vehicle. However it also many high risks that come along with it. Many accidents can happen such as falling off the quad, getting your foot stuck under the wheel, flipping the quad over you, and even crashing it into something causing you to fly off. Before you ride a quad you should make sure you read all the warning signs, and make sure you have all the right protective gear so you will be safe. Riding without a helmet is against the law, and if you wear one it will prevent your head from getting injured if something happened to you. Even though quading is high risk activity, I think it is worth it because it is can be extremely fun. If you make sure you are safe while doing riding a quad I don't think there is anything wrong with it.

What it means to be a Canadian

I think that being a Canadian is a great privilege. Some things we are blessed to have is a good health care system, a democratic government that gives us the freedom to voice our opinions, and we have a great education system that allows us to have many options and doors open for our future.
In Canada the health care system is run efficiently, and there are many hospitals located throughout the country so it is convenient for citizens to go to a hospital close to home if there is an emergency. Canada provides a good health care insurance system which makes medical bills of all kinds affordable to the citizens. It is a great comfort to know that you do not have to worry about huge medical bills if a family member or loved one becomes ill, most of the bills are reasonable, and your insurance plan can help cover the cost. We are fortunate to have this in Canada because many countries around us do not.
Education is very important to the people of Canada. The schools in Canada do a great job of providing many different class options that appeal to a variety of different students. Since there are so many school programs to choose from it opens many doors for our future, and provides us with endless possibilities. Once you get into grade 9 you are already asked to think about the collage or university you would like to attend after high school. Doing this at such an early age is good thing, I think it is a great way to get the students thinking about their future and where they want to go in life.
I think the most important thing Canada has to offer is its great government system. We are blessed to live in a free country where it is our right to voice our opinion. We are fortunate because we are encouraged by our democratic leaders to think for ourselves, and form an opinion based on what we personally believe. We are also lucky because we have the freedom to choose which religion we want, where we will go to school, what we will be become, and many other important decisions like these.
Overall, I think we are so lucky to live in a free country like Canada. Education, health care, and government are all important things we are blessed with. I think sometime we take for granted all the things we have as Canadian citizens. So many countries around the world do not have these things, and I think it is important that all citizens of Canada are proud to be Canadian.
