June Newsletter..

:SIX MONTHS IN SPACE::
If I were given the opportunity to board the International Space Station I would definitely not decline. I would want to do it because I think it would really be a neat experience. It would be cool to see how things work in the space programs. It would be really educational, and I would would be interested to find out how things works and the amount of work it takes to run a space program.

: SWINE FLU: NOT JUST FOR PIGS::
If I had a plan to go to Mexico on a holiday, and found out about the Swine Flu being a danger, I would not cancel my trip. I would not do it because the chances of me catching the flu are pretty small. I would want to go there to just enjoy myself and relax. If I were to catch the Swine Flu while I was there, I would quickly get on a plane and fly back home.

John Maynard Keynes

John Maynard Keynes was a british economist who had strong ideas that have had a mighty hard impact on modern economics, political theories, and government policies. His ideas were that the government should bail out the economy when they are faced with a recession and he thought the private sectors were inefficient. His ideas have played a huge roll on the economy today.

The idea that the government should bail out the economy in the time of a recession is the trend that many countries are following today. One prime example is the United States of America. Right now they are in a huge recession, and yet they keep loaning out money to people, and spending way more than they intake. In the long run they believe that this is a good thing, and will work to their advantage in the future. It will be interesting to see what happens in the future as the economy hopefully gets better.

When Kaynes was going about this plan he had two main ideas that would make his plan possible. One was to invest in infrastructure, and other was reduce interest rates.  He believed that by doing these things the economy would start to progress and speed up again. However by doing these two things the value in money was lost, causing inflation. Inflation is a huge problem today because money is so common, and people do not realize the significant value of it; instead they spend in faster than they can intake it. Many countries today suffer from inflation, and I wonder if the ideas of Keynes is what started the popular trend of inflation?

I think one of the major problems with Keynes economic plans was the fact that he just wanted to ignore all the bad things about the economy and cover them up with money. Money cannot solve everyones problems, in fact most of the time they make things worse. In my opinion, Mr. Keynes plan was intelligent, but in the long run it did not give countries positive effects. It mostly started a bad trend that brought about inflation, and bad planning that has led many countries to lend out money they do not posses.

John Maynard Keynes' has had many strong ideas that have effected our economy today greatly. His ideas of bailing out the economy in the face of a recession have caused many countries to fall into inflationary issues. These issues that many countries are facing in the world are not going to be easy to get out of. I don't believe his ideas are going to help us in the long run because spending more money is not always the answer to the problems we face. I think we need to face these problems with our heads held high, and quit spending money we do not have!

IMF: International Monetary Fund

The IMF is an organization that oversees the global financial system. It is also an organization that formed to stabilize international exchange rates and facilitate development.  There are three main things that the International Monetary Fund deal with, they include surveillance, lends to other countries, and they providing technical assistance. These three things are used to strengthen financial sectors of the economy.

Surveillance involves the monitoring of economic and financial developments, and the provision of policy advice. Surveillance is important because in today's globalized economy the decisions of one country affect many other countries also. There are two different types of surveillance the IMP deals with. The first is multilateral surveillance, this is an oversight of the worlds economy. The second is bilateral surveillance, this section comprises appraisal of and advice on the policies of each country that is a member of the IMF.

Lending is a major responsibility of the IMF. They are responsible to provide loans to member countries experiencing payment balancing problems. Since they lend money, it gives countries a chance to rebuild their international reserves. Unlike developing banks, the IMF does not lend for specific projects, they lend to countries who are going to fail. By doing this they are able to help a lot of countries out when they are in desperate times of need.

One of the most important things the IMF does is provide technical assistance. By doing this they are able to support the developments of the member countries by  helping them effectively manage their economic policy and financial affairs. About 90% of the IMF's technical assistance goes to low and middle-class income countries, and post-conflict countries. By helping  countries reduce weaknesses the technical assistance they provides a more robust and stable global economy.

The IMF is a great organization that helps many countries with their issues dealing with finances. Surveillance, lends, and technical assistance are only a few of the things they do. These three things combined all help to strengthen the international financial system, and all the financial sectors of the economy. This organization is rapidly growing and continues to help countries in need.

The Oka Crisis!

Late in March 1990, the Mohawk First Nations people (commonly known as the Kanesatake) got news that the town of Oka, Quebec was planning on expanding a golf coarse on their land which was at one time a burial ground for their sacred ancestors. They were very upset about this, and they decided to barricade the land and not let anyone touch it because they believed it belonged to them. While in the process of barricading this land a police officer was shot and killed, many citizens were scared for their lives, and it caused a great disturbance in Eastern Canada.

In my opinion the Kanesatake people did not handle this issue very well. When they heard that this land was going to be occupied they should have gone and talked to the government leaders of this area before they starting taking physical action. If they would have taken the time to do this I believe the police man that got shot could have lived. I think as humans, we tend to make rash decisions and not think things through very well when we are angry. I think this is what must have happened with these native people. Obviously they were upset, but this issue could have been prevented if they would have calmed down and thought things through better.

When the Oka Crises happened many citizens of Eastern Canada were scared for their lives, and did not want to go out of the comfort of their home. I can understand their fear because I know if the First Nations People from around our part of Canada came to Magrath and started to barricade the roads I would also be extremely scared to leave my home. When this happened in Quebec, the First Nations People were carrying weapons with them which made them a serious threat. I would not want to take the risk of leaving my home to travel around the community if I knew there were armed men that could possibly hurt me.

I think some of the  most damaging effect that the Oka Crisis caused was the disturbance it brought to Eastern Canada, and the reputation it left for the Natives in Quebec.  After this happened the Kanesatake people earned a reputation of violence, and many people grew very fearful of them. This is unfortunate because it even gave a bad name to the Kanesatake people who were not involved in the disturbance. Even though it was only the one tribe of natives who were involved I get the idea that all First Nations People in general are violent people.  I know this is not true, and that most Native people mean well, but it does not give them a good reputation.

The Oka Crisis was a very unfortunate event that took place in the history of Canada. Because of it one police man got shot, many people were fearful for their lives, it caused great disturbance among Eastern Canadian citizens, and it gave the Kanesatake people a bad reputation. I think it was wrong for the Government to not inform the First Nations People that they were going to occupy their ancestral land, but I also believe the situation should have been handled more maturely by the Natives. I hate to see awful things like this happen in my country, but evidently things like this occasionally happen. When events like these conspire, I think the most important thing we can do is learn from past experiences and handle situations more maturely.

Red River Rising

If I were in a situation where I was faced with the decision to save someone's life I don't think I could walk away. No matter what the circumstances may be everyone deserves to be saved. If the person knowingly entered into this situation and put themselves on harm by their own choice some people would walk away and say it was their fault. I personally could not do that because I don't think I would be able to live with the regret inside of me knowing that I could have helped save a life and I walked away. I know that if I were the person that needed to be saved I would want someone to help me, and I would forever be grateful to the person who stepped up and entered a risky situation in order to help me.

Spotlight on North Korea

I think North Korea should be able to have a space program and develop nuclear weapons if they wish. If they are allowed to do this they would have better self-defence, and protection for their country. I think the reason countries would be apposed to this is because they are scared they will use the weapons to harm other countries and become a threat. In my opinion, I think as long as they do not use these weapons to harm other countries there is nothing wrong with the idea. A lot of countries are aloud to have these weapons, and I don't see why there is any reason they can't have them too.

UNPFII

The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues is an organization that deals with issues related to the indigenous people of the world.  In the world today there are many challenges that these people face such as the women of these nations feel they are not able to raise their voices and state opinions, climate change can be devastating to the people, and they feel like their way of life is being taken away from them.

Indigenous women’s today are the target for most of the discrimination. They are subjected to illiteracy, extreme poverty, trafficking, lack of access to ancestral land, violence, poor health care, and many more things. When different villages fight against one another, the women are exposed to most of the pain and suffering. This can become very hard on them and make it difficult to try to raise a family, and do everyday household activities. Today the UNPFII is trying to get more involvement and participation for women available.

Indigenous people all have a close relationship with the environment. They are very concerned about the high altitude regions with glacier melts that are affecting many of their people. Because of the glaciers it is resulting in more water in the short term, but in the long run there will be less water as glaciers and snow cover shrink.  Indigenous people also depend a lot on the environment for hunting and trapping. They feel like the change in species available to them is becoming smaller, which means they have less variety.

I think the main issue that these people are dealing with is the fact that their ways of life are being taken from them shortly. They feel like their culture is being taken from them, and they are no longer able to participate in their special cultural activities. I think they have a point, but I also think that they need to adapt to the things that are happening around them. Maintaining your culture is important, but I personally believe that they need to assimilate to other cultures.

There are many issues that these people face. Climate change, women not being able to voice their opinion, and the feeling that their culture is being taken from them are only a few of the issues. I think the UNPFII means well and they are trying to help these people all around the world work through their problems. From what I understand, I don’t think they are enforcing these changes hard enough. If they truly want to make a difference they need to start taking action on these issues that they talk about, and make more progress so life for these people can change.

Silk Road

In the beginning of the first century transporting goods from place to place was not always an easy task. Many people did not get to enjoy the luxury of having a variety of food, clothing, and other materials because they were not located in the right area. When the “Silk Road” was formed it was possible to receive and trade materials with other countries. Also, people got to share knowledge, religious beliefs, social customs, and many more things. However, issues did arise such as duty having to be paid, and people getting beat up, or harassed.

When the “Silk Road” first opened many people were exciting, and longed to travel and explore other peoples ideas, and trade with them. Before this time, what they were able to acquire was very limited, so when this change was put to action people grew excited, and they were eager to learn more about the other people and what they were all about. This was a positive thing, and people started to “come out of their shell” and learn about the ideas of other people.

Another great thing about the “Silk Road” was that people got a chance to not only trade goods, but to share ideas with one another. Ideas such as inventions, religious beliefs, artistic styles, social customs, and even languages were shared among the people. When this happened I think the people would have got a greater perspective on life, and would have learned to look at things from another prospective. I think this is a really good thing because they could become globalized. This is really important because a lot of our countries customs are ideas from other countries. It is important to learn and be aware of other countries. Since the “Silk Road” was formed the people of these countries were able to do that.

Although there were many great things that came along with the “Silk Road” many bad things came also. One of the bad things that happened was when the Arabian countries decided that they would make the travelers passing through their country pay a duty on their items. This caused a great stir among the people. Another negative thing that happened was people would get beat up, and badly hurt while traveling this road. Many gangs and harmful people would be around these roads, and steal  things from the foreign travelers. These are just a few of the negative things that happened.

Overall, I personally believe that the “Silk Road” was a good idea. It gave people a chance to mingle among other people and lifestyles; it also gave people a chance to adapt ideas and customs from other countries, which helped them to become globalized. Unfortunately, bad things did happen such as extra money having to be paid, and gangs hurting people. However, I believe that this was a really good idea that brought a lot of happiness to the people, and effected their lives for the good.

Sudan

The term colonialism refers to governing influence of a nation over a dependent country, territory, or people. Colonialism happened in the country of Sudan in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

In the past Britain an Egypt have played a huge roll in the history of Sudan. Late in the 1800's Britain colonized and ruled over Sudan. A few years later in 1899 Britain and Egypt joint in the ruling of Sudan. Together they came up with this policy "closed door". This policy was used to separate the cultures and people of the north and south from each other. When this happened the majority of the North was populated mainly by Arab decent, while the South was mainly populated with people from the African origin.  In 1965 Sudan finally regained their independence and they agreed to abandon the "closed door" policy. When this happened the two sides of the country were reunited and the power was handed over to the north, which means the Arab race has given the power. The Arabs then enforced their way of life and culture onto everyone else despite their personal beliefs. The people who did not agree with the Islamic way of life were denied many rights. These tension eventually led to a civil war, and even to this day the people of this country do not get along with one another, and they are unable to work as one.

I personally believe that instead of the constant battle between the northern and southern Sudan they should just become two separate countries, and end this strife. I think it wrong that the North was given all the power, and the south really had no influence in the decision making. I think it would be nice if these people could just get along and learn to function together. However, the tension between them is so strong that this is probably not a possibility, which is sad.

Potlatch

A potlatch is a festive ceremony that is practiced by the indigenous people of the Pacific North Coast, some areas of the United States, and in the Canadian province British Columbia. A potlatch is often held  to establish or uphold his status position in the society. Potlatches can be put on the mark an important event such as a birth of a new child, a birthday, or a marriage. These ceremonies are hosted by local or elite groups in a community. At a Potlatch a huge feast is held, performances such as singing and dancing take place, and gifts are given to the host of the Potlatch. Some gifts may include dried foods, sugar, flour, and sometimes money. The people providing these gifts may want to barter with one another so they can have the most valued gift.

Some people or cultures that take place in a potlatch include Nuu-chah-nulth, Kwakiutl, Bella Coola, Haida, Nootka, Tsimshian, and Tlingit.  A potlatch is most commonly compared to our modern society wedding. At weddings feasts are provided, and gifts are given, and they are held to honor the acclomplishment. There are many similarities to a potlatch and wedding because they are both huge events that are put on with a lot of consideration and planning.

Residential Schools

Early in 1900's many children were forced out of their homes by the Canadian government, and they were ordered to go to Residential Schools. In my opinion I think this was a very poor choice made on behalf of the government. The children that were forced to go to these schools grew up without the benefits of being raised by their family, they were forced to choose a religion they didn't believe in, and they were physically and sexually abused. Many of the children were damaged from being put into these schools, and I think that is unfortunate.

When you are growing up you need to have the influence of your family around you so you can learn as much as possible for when you are a parent. The children that were forced into these schools didn't have the chance to learn from their parents, and they were mainly looking out for themselves only, and didn't have any adults to rely on for help. They were only aloud to visit their family members a few weeks out of the year, so there was no time to form a relationship with them. In my life, my family is so important to me and I cannot imagine what it would have been like to be taken away from them and have no way of getting back to them.

Religion is a very important part of your life and it can often times determine the kind of person you are, and where your standards are. When the children entered the schools they were told that they had to worship another religion. This would have been very difficult because you cannot change what you believe quickly. No one can tell you what to believe, it has to be what you feel inside. It would have been very hard on the kids, and I can assume that they would have been very confused and lost, and didn't know who to believe, or what was true. Religion is  a part of you, what you choose to believe is your right, and that should never get taken away.

The teachers at these were often times not very kind to the children, and they took pleasure out of physically, and even sexually abusing the students. When they were out of line the educators would beat them, and whip them with thick straps until their was serious pain or damage. I don't think any child deserves this kind of treatment, and if they were able to stay in their homes and be raised in a normal family this would not happen. As a result of this the children did not know who they could trust and who they could not trust. I feel pity for them because it would be so difficult growing up not knowing who really cared about you.

Overall residential schools were not good for the children. Because of them many children grew up not being able to trust anyone, and they were greatly damaged from their past. Not being able to grow up under the influence of your family, being forced to choose a religion, and being physically and sexually abused are all things that can change the person you are. I think it was highly unfair to put these families through this pain. I am sure the government did not intend to damage these children, but evidently they did, and it is a mistake that we can all learn from. Everyone deserves a good life, and because of these schools the children were not able to obtain that, and there was nothing they could do about it.

National Sorry Days/ Lubicon Land Claims

1. In Australia 1997 an inquiry was held on the issue of weather or not to remove aboriginal children from their farmiles, known as the "stolen generations" .  After this happened, one year later  Nation Sorry Days became a holiday in Australia.  This holiday  is meant to acknowledge that wrong had been done to indigenous families in Australia, and they wanted to begin the healing process by saying they were sorry.
As a result to national sorry day more people are aware of these serious issues, and events are being held to acknowledge these issues. At these events there are indigenous Australian citizens, and non-indigenous citizens speaking about this issue, and showing the people that they are cared for. Also, there is a day dedicated to this cause ever year, which helps people to remember.

2. The problem with the Lubicon people is that they are very upset because the government is drilling for oil on their land, and so they are not getting any profit from this. In my opinion I don't think they have any right to complain about the government because they are being handed hundreds of dollars each year just because of their rase. I don't think anything should be done in the fix this because I think the people need to realize just how lucky they are, and they are already getting many benefits from the government that not all Canadian citizens have. I think it is rude of them to be so harsh on the government when they are being given so much.
I don't think anything else needs to be done to make these people happy because they are already given so much. If they stopped and looked around them and noticed how many people are suffering from having no money, and they are handed money every month they would realize that there is no need to complain. They are already well off as it is!

Banking Crisis In America

Today the banks in America are suffering a great deal, and it is effecting many people and the economy. It is hard to tell who is entirely to blame for this issue, but there are many factors that contribute to this awful crisis. Toxic assets, debt, and leverage are all factors that contribute to the failure that banks in america are experiencing. This is scary, and the banks in America are crashing so fast that it frightens me!
A toxic asset is an asset that that has no value, and it is not worth selling on the market because it will be a loss. An example for this would be if someone bought a house and payed $200,000, and they planned on selling it for $300,000 so they could make a profit. However, the demand for housing went down, and they most they could sell their house for would be $100,00. This would be toxic asset because they would not be making a profit off this house, they would be losing money. This is happening all over America, and the people are suffering because of it.
Another contributing factor the this sudden recession in America is debt. In my opinion the banks are making it too easy for someone to take out a loan. Some of the people that are taking out these loans have no way of paying them back. For example, if  someone wanted to purchase a house they would go to the bank and take out a loan, and they would slowly pay it back. But, what happens when the people getting the loans run out of money? When this happens the bank also suffers because they are not taking the money from the people that is needed. In America right now this is happening to millions of people, and the bank is lending out more than they have, and if the people do not pay it back they are losing a great deal of money.
Liability can be a great thing for people if it works out sucesfully. Liability is when someone takes a product that they paid $1000 for, and then they sell it for $1200, so they are making a great profit from this.  The problem with this is that it does not always sell like they would like it to. This is happening in America in the housing business today. Houses were on great demand, and because they were on such high demand they were selling for very expsensive prices. So many contractors were building houses thinking they could sell them and make a large sum of money. Suddenly the economy started to crash, and they houses were no longer on high demand, and the prices dropped. As a result of this many contractors lost money, and there are many new houses sitting empty because no one can afford to buy them.
I think this crash of banking in the United States is really scary and real. Living in Canada I don't think we realize the effect that this has on us as Canadian citizens. I think it is important for us to be aware of this issue, and help deal with it because maybe some day in the future it could happen to us. Things like debt, liability, and toxic assets are all factors of why the banks of America are experiencing this devistating crisis. I hope that this will come to an end in the future, but I am sorry to say that honestly I don't think it is going to happen any time soon. America is so deep in debt that it will take a lot of work to big themselves out. I think it is important that we keep a positive attitude and hope for the best.

Racist or Right? Exploring the Issue

After doing some research on the issue of naming teams or mascots after cultures, I have come to the conclusion that it is not disrespectful to do this. I don't think believe this is offensive, and I don't think they intended to offend anyone. I think it is a great honor to be named after a mascot because that team is trying to live up to the name. I don't think individuals should be taking offense when it is not intended. As long as the team is being respectful I find there is no harm.

1. She wants to make a clear distinction between the words "tattoo" and "moko" because they have serious differences. When someone gets a tattoo there is really no deep meaning that comes with it. However, when you get a "moko" there is deep meaning in it, and there are good reasons, and stories behind what the moko displays. It can represent many things such as beauty, warriorhood, identity, and many other things like these. I think she is directing this message to the people who are unaware of the real meaning behind the moko's, and the people who are uneducated and think they are just simple tattoos.

2. She uses fact in her song. I think this is effective because it provides information in the lyrics of the songs, and it teaches a lesson to those who are listening. Songs are catchy, and the lyrics are easy to remember if you listen to it frequently, so what she is teaching in the song sticks with people, even if they do not realize it.

3. She has strong beliefs against globalization. She believes that you should maintian your ethnic background, and keep it for yourself. She doesn't believe that you should freely trade between countries, she believes that you should pay more for the goods of tribes.  The messages presented in her songs strongly suggest that she has these beliefs, and I think she is proud of what she believes and wants many people to be aware.

Legacy

A. The term legacy refers to anything handed down from the past,  such as an ancestor or a predecessor.

B.   The "Richmond Oval" located in Vancouver BC was built for the special occasion of the 2010 Olympics. This building is where most of the events will take place, and it will be the main attraction of the olympics. I think it will be the legacy of the 2010 olympics because it will be where most of the action takes place, it is where athletes from all around the world will be fighting for the gold metal, new records will be set in this building, people from all around the would will remember this building. The "Richmond Oval" is a legacy because it will still be used after the olympics and everyone who enters it will remember the 2010 olympics, and the outstanding events that took place there will live on as long as that building is standing.

High Risk Activity

One high risk activity that many citizen of our town participate in is quading. Quading is extremely fun, and can be a great way to let out steam, and if you live on a farm it can be a wonderful source of transportation that allows you to get around without starting your motor vehicle. However it also many high risks that come along with it. Many accidents can happen such as falling off the quad, getting your foot stuck under the wheel, flipping the quad over you, and even crashing it into something causing you to fly off. Before you ride a quad you should make sure you read all the warning signs, and make sure you have all the right protective gear so you will be safe. Riding without a helmet is against the law, and if you wear one it will prevent your head from getting injured if something happened to you. Even though quading is high risk activity, I think it is worth it because it is can be extremely fun. If you make sure you are safe while doing riding a quad I don't think there is anything wrong with it.

What it means to be a Canadian

I think that being a Canadian is a great privilege. Some things we are blessed to have is a good health care system, a democratic government that gives us the freedom to voice our opinions, and we have a great education system that allows us to have many options and doors open for our future.
In Canada the health care system is run efficiently, and there are many hospitals located throughout the country so it is convenient for citizens to go to a hospital close to home if there is an emergency. Canada provides a good health care insurance system which makes medical bills of all kinds affordable to the citizens. It is a great comfort to know that you do not have to worry about huge medical bills if a family member or loved one becomes ill, most of the bills are reasonable, and your insurance plan can help cover the cost. We are fortunate to have this in Canada because many countries around us do not.
Education is very important to the people of Canada. The schools in Canada do a great job of providing many different class options that appeal to a variety of different students. Since there are so many school programs to choose from it opens many doors for our future, and provides us with endless possibilities. Once you get into grade 9 you are already asked to think about the collage or university you would like to attend after high school. Doing this at such an early age is good thing, I think it is a great way to get the students thinking about their future and where they want to go in life.
I think the most important thing Canada has to offer is its great government system. We are blessed to live in a free country where it is our right to voice our opinion. We are fortunate because we are encouraged by our democratic leaders to think for ourselves, and form an opinion based on what we personally believe. We are also lucky because we have the freedom to choose which religion we want, where we will go to school, what we will be become, and many other important decisions like these.
Overall, I think we are so lucky to live in a free country like Canada. Education, health care, and government are all important things we are blessed with. I think sometime we take for granted all the things we have as Canadian citizens. So many countries around the world do not have these things, and I think it is important that all citizens of Canada are proud to be Canadian.
